Jinju Namgang Lantern Festival

Yudeung (floating lanterns) originated from floating lanterns on the Namgang River during the Battle of Jinjuseong, one of the three great victories of the Imjin War, as a military signal for communicating with militia outside the fortress and as a means of communication to convey news between family members. Inheriting this tradition, the citizens of Jinju have operated the 'Yudeung Contest' as a program of the 'Gaecheon Art Festival', the first local comprehensive arts festival in Korea held since 1949, and since 2000 it has been held independently as the 'Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival'. Yudeung has been sublimated into a festival wishing for citizens' desire for peace and love, happiness, and wish fulfillment, and today it has grown into a global festival that shares the value of peace with people around the world. Every autumn, in 'Jinju, the city of light and peace', the spectacle of yudeung spread around the Namgang River and Jinjuseong makes one reflect on the historical meaning contained within along with the beautiful scenery.
