Daedong Law Enforcement Monument

Translation in progress — showing the Korean original for now.

The Daedong Law Enforcement Monument was erected to commemorate the implementation of the Daedong Law. The Daedong Law was a system in the Joseon period under which rice was paid instead of local specialties levied as taxes; it was first implemented in Gyeonggi Province in 1608 (the 41st year of King Seonjo) and expanded over about 100 years. In 1651 (the 2nd year of King Hyojong), Kim Yuk petitioned for the Daedong Law to be implemented in Chungcheong Province and obtained the king's permission. As this produced good results, including easing the burden on the people who had suffered difficulties, the king ordered that it be commemorated and widely publicized to all.
