Cheongpungsa Temple

Cheongpungsa is a shrine built to honor the loyalty and virtue of Master Ya-eun Giljae, a loyal subject of the late Goryeo period. The portrait and memorial tablet of Master Giljae are enshrined here. Master Giljae was a scholar of the late Goryeo to early Joseon period; he went to Gaegyeong and studied under various masters such as Yi Saek, Jeong Mong-ju, and Gwon Geun. He passed the state examination several times but did not take office, and formed a close friendship with Yi Bang-won (later King Taejong), son of Yi Seong-gye, the founder of Joseon, who lived in the same village. Later, when King Taejong summoned him, he refused, saying that a subject does not serve two kings, and he is counted together with Yi Saek and Jeong Mong-ju as the Three Recluses of Goryeo. In the 12th year of King Hyeonjong (1671), when Giljae had observed mourning in his early years at Buri-myeon, Geumsan-gun, Bulli-ri, his descendants and local scholars together founded Bullisa (不二祠), and in the 3rd year of King Sukjong (1678) his memorial tablet was enshrined. However, in the 17th year of King Yeongjo (1741) it was demolished for violating the prohibition on establishing new seowon. Later, in the 37th year of King Yeongjo (1761), the magistrate of Geumsan-gun, Min Baek-hong, and local Confucian scholars erected a stele inscribed with the four characters 'Baekse Cheongpung (百世淸風)' at the historic site. Afterwards, the shrine was rebuilt in 1804, but suffered the misfortune of being demolished again in the 5th year of King Gojong (1868). In 1928, the Cheongpung Bigak, Cheongpungsa, and Cheongpung Seowon were restored. In front of Cheongpungsa are the Baekse Cheongpung Stele (百世淸風) and the Jiju Jungnyu Stele (支柱中流), which demonstrate the loyalty of Ya-eun Giljae.
